protein powder copy*UPDATE 5/10/17 This post originally posted in 2013. Power Meal is no longer produced by Young Living. However, you may find this POST helpful for comparing different shakes. The adaptogens in Shakeology are one of the reasons I now use that.

Today I’m sharing seven reasons I think this is one of the best, if not the best protein powder for women. I specify for women because most women I know want to lose a little weight and most have a low functioning thyroid.

What are the symptoms of a low functioning thyroid?

According to MayoClinic.com they are:

  • Fatigue
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Puffy face
  • Hoarseness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Elevated blood cholesterol level
  • Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
  • Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints
  • Heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods
  • Thinning hair
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Depression
  • Impaired memory

Just because your blood work comes back ‘within normal range’ doesn’t mean it isn’t low and/or moving in the wrong direction. So you may be battling this whether diagnosed or not.

{disclaimer: of course, see your health care practitioner for diagnosis and treatment}

With that said,

Here are seven reasons I think this is the best protein powder for women:

1. Brown Rice Protein

A meal replacement that gives you protein and nutrients can be beneficial for weight loss. However, soy has been hotly debated. Soy protein has been implicated as disrupting thyroid function. On MayoClinic.com they won’t come out and say to avoid it, but they do caution using soy within 4 hours of taking your hypothyroid medication.

The Whole Soy Story: the Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food: “Soy isoflavones cause significant endocrine disruption both directly and indirectly”

Most meal replacement shakes (and protein bars) are made with soy protein. Read your labels! Since soy is implicated in interfering with the thyroid and since it is the number one genetically modified crop in America—I think it’s wise to look at other options. Brown rice protein is dairy-free, loaded with amino acids and easily absorbed by the body. One serving of Power Meal offers 20 grams of brown rice protein.

2. Kelp

Power Meal contains kelp which is a good source of iodine and other trace minerals. I frequently recommend kelp to my clients that are trying to support their low functioning thyroid and it’s great that it is already included.

3. Enzymes

Enzymes are important for digestive function and help the body break down the food you eat. When food is cooked and processed beneficial enzymes are usually destroyed. To ensure that your body is properly digesting and assimilating the protein and nutrients in Power Meal there is a combination of lipase and protease.

If you’ve tried protein shakes before, only to end up with stomach cramps or other ‘plumbing’ problems, you will appreciate this quality!

4. Eleuthero

Eleuthero is an adaptogen and that means it helps the body adapt. Adaptogens are known to help the body cope with stress. They can also help with stamina, boost brain concentration and improve immune response. I don’t know a busy mom who doesn’t need help with all of these things!

5. MSM

MSM is MethylSulfonylMethane, an organic sulfur compound. Ladies will appreciate that it promotes healthy hair, skin, nails and joints. Sulfur is crucial in the process of maintaining a vital healthy body and mind as it has many uses in the body.

6. Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba can enhance circulation to the brain, enhancing memory and brain function. Do I really need to say anymore!?!

7. Magnesium

Magnesium is so important to so many body functions. Did you know that with Vitamin B6 (also in Power Meal) it can be helpful for relieving PMS symptoms? Magnesium works hand in hand with Calcium.

Bonus I had to end the list somewhere but I could go on…

There are some other great nutrients in Power Meal like chromium which can help keep blood sugar stable; B Vitamins for energy; and Vitamin C and Alpha lipoic acid to neutralize free radical damage (anti-aging).

I’ll end with the question everyone will be asking at this point—But how does it taste?

Well, first let me say that brown rice protein can be a little chalky (I’ve tried other brands and they were all that way). So yes, it is a bit chalky. The last two brands I tried were immediately spit into the sink. {Downright nasty!} This one has a vanilla flavor with a hint of cinnamon and cardamom for a light vanilla spice flavor. I much prefer it to the others I’ve tried and I don’t find it hard to drink each day. I would totally recommend a Blender Bottle for mixing though!

  • Would this be safe to use as a meal replacement if you are taking a small (1 mg per day) dose of clonazepam? I really want to get healthy and was recommended this shake highly. I have suffered from anxiety and anxiety attacks and am in the process of tapering the clonazepam slowly. Would it be ok to use this while I am still taking the medication? Just concerned because of some of the ingredients.

    1. Brandy, I’m not an MD so can’t advise you on your prescription meds…best to ask your doctor. Is there a specific ingredient that concerns you?

        1. I consider all the ingredients to be safe, but I really can’t speak to how they may interact with prescription medicine. It would be best to ask your doctor.

  • Can you compare the ingredients in power meal and /or balance complete with Shakeology? Also, the health benefits ? thanks

    1. Ginny, I personally love Balance Complete as well and often mix it with Power Meal. Balance Complete is full of fiber and nutrients and is wonderful for intestinal health. I’ll have to look at Shakeology, I’ve heard good things and have glanced at it but haven’t done a side-by-side comparison. I don’t recall it having all the beneficial nutrients added that Power Meal has.
