Galatians 6:7-8 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
The principle of sowing and reaping is a general truth that applies to so many things on this earth. What is reaped, whether good or bad, depends on what is sown. If I desired to reap a juicy, ripe watermelon, would I plant strawberry seeds? No, of course not!
So if we are reaping disease in our life, shouldn’t we look to see what we are sowing?
From Deuteronomy 28:58-61 and Exodus 15:26 we saw how disease was seen as a curse to the Israelites. And from the previous post I think we can see that health is to be desired. So why are Christian’s sick? From Scripture, I have found four causes of sickness in Christians. I’m not saying this is an exhaustive list – but four general causes. Please be Berean and share with me anything YOU find!
First, I’d love for you to read each verse noting cause and effect (sowing and reaping principle) and tell me how you would describe the four causes of sickness BEFORE you look at what I wrote (you’ll find that below the verses)
John 9:2-3 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him
John 11:3-4 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
Job 5:6-7 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Deuteronomy 7:12, 15 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the Lord thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:
And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee
Leviticus 26:21, 25 And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.
And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
1 Corinthians 11:29-30 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
Numbers 12:9-10 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them; and he departed. And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous.
2 Samuel 24:10, 15, 17 And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O Lord, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.
And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep what have they done? Let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house
Psalm 107:17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
Psalm 38:3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger: neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.
Exodus 20:5-6 Thou shalt now bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me: And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Matthew 9:32-33 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marveled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
Mark 9:17-18 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
Luke 13:11, 12, 16 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?
Hosea 4:6a My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…
1 Corinthians 3: 16-17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy: for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
Daniel 1:8,15 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
This is where I want to list the answers upside down….like they used to be in the Sunday Comics section 🙂
Again, this is the way I’ve read and understood what the Bible has to say about sickness. Please share below what you found!
Sin was the assumed cause – but the Scriptures show that wasn’t the case. It was to show the glory of God!
I listed a LOT of verses here! There’s sort of a progression…but the short answer is Sin!
In Job and Romans we see that we are born sinners.
In Deuteronomy and Leviticus we see that not following God’s commandments brought disease. So actions (or lack of action) that was done that brought sickness. In 1st Corinthians it was taking the Lord’s supper unworthily. And in the remaining verses, more instances of sin bringing about sickness.
The last verse in Exodus 20 even shows us that it could be the sin of our fathers.
In these verses notice the word “spirit.” In Luke the woman didn’t just have “infirmity” she had a “spirit of infirmity.” So evil spirits are another cause of disease.
This cause may not be as clearly stated in the Bible but I believe the principle provides a legitimate reason for sickness in Christians and that is an ignorance to caring for our temple. Our lack of knowledge in caring for our temple, means we are defiling our temple and reaping what we’ve sown.
If you haven’t yet, journal and record what the Holy Spirit shows you about these verses.
We are going to dive a little deeper into this….
Next post we’ll talk more about Cause #1 and #2
